Mud Hens hot, take pair from Bulls

Staff report

TOLEDO, Ohio — The Durham Bulls finished Saturday’s regularly scheduled game against the Toledo Mud Hens with everyone still in the dugout, though that didn’t translate to victory on the field.

The Mud Hens, meanwhile, were without their starting pitcher, their manager, their pitching coach and a reliever who threw only one pitch in the seventh inning before being ejected by plate umpire Adam Hamari.

None of that kept Toledo from finishing off a 4-2 win over the Bulls, which followed the Mud Hens’ 7-2 victory in the completion of Friday night’s rain-suspended game.

It all started in the top of the second, when Durham’s Chris Gimenez ripped a leadoff double and Will Rhymes blasted a two-out homer to give the Bulls a 2-0 lead.

Toledo starter Drew Smyly hit Nevin Ashley with the next pitch, and Hamari ejected Smyly, then Mud Hens manager Phil Nevin.

The Mud Hens tied the score in the fourth with an RBI double by Danny Worth and a wild pitch by Bulls starter Lance Pendleton.

In the sixth, Adam Liberatore (1-1) came on in relief for Durham, and John Lindsey slapped a one-out single. Danny Dorn’s single moved pinch-runner Cale Iorg to third, and Ben Guez’s triple to right drove in both runners.

Bruce Rondon took over on the mound for the Mud Hens in the seventh, but his first pitch to Rhymes promted an ejection by Hamari — followed by Toledo pitching coach A.J. Sager.

Rhymes drew a walk from reliever Collin Balester, but the Mud Hens closed the game with a pop out by Ashley and groundouts by Cole Figueroa and Beckham.

Despite the fireworks on the field, the Bulls managed just three hits off the Mud Hens in the nightcap.

Friday night’s game was suspended because of rain with the score tied 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth.

But the Mud Hens took control when play resumed Saturday, as Worth drew a bases-loaded walk from reliever Brandon Gomes for a 2-1 lead.

Toledo piled on five runs in the fifth, as the Mud Hens’ first two batters reached base before the Bulls recorded a pair of outs. But Justin Henry ripped a two-run double and Jerad Heath followed with a homer to break the game open.

Cesar Ramos (4-4), who started on Friday, took the loss for the Bulls.
