Ryan Lochte

It turns out that wearing a badass grill is not the way to receive a medal in the Olympics, even if you’ve already taken home the gold. Ask swimmer Ryan Lochte, who won a gold medal in the 400-meter individual medley. He was not allowed to wear his grill when he received his medal.

Wayne Drehs from ESPN.com tweeted that Olympic officials were not on board with the idea of Lochte wearing his grill while receiving his medal:

Lochte told me he tried to wear his grill on the podium, only to have an Olympic official tell him if he did so, he wouldn’t get his gold. — Wayne Drehs (@espnWD) July 28, 2012

There’s no clear reasoning behind the IOC’s official telling Lochte not to wear his grill, and this has sparked controversy. Lochte obviously got rapper Paul Wall’s support via Twitter:

Funk Master Flex also tweeted his support:

USA TODAY also took an Instagram picture of Lochte’s mouth ice:

Do you think Olympic officials are just over-reacting, or do you think grills are inappropriate? Discuss!
