Austin Rivers looks back at year at Duke and future of program
view slideshow (4 images) DURHAM — A few days after deciding to leave Duke to enter the NBA draft, freshman All-ACC guard Austin Rivers agreed to a 1-on-1 interview with Herald-Sun reporter Steve Wiseman. Here are Rivers thoughts about his freshman season, both personally and as a team, and his plans for the future: How did your year at Duke make you a better player and therefore better prepared for the NBA? “I think the player I am now is a totally different player than the player that came in. I think, for one, I’m more mature as a person and a player. I can handle situations better. I just think I’m more mature as a person. As far as my body, I’m a lot stronger. I know more about the game. I can handle things on and off the court.

Duke spring football: QB Connette, CB Cockrell win MVP honors

That’s true for any position he’s asked to play. As part of Duke’s new offensive package that emphasizes versatility, Connette lined up and wide receiver and tight end in addition to quarterback during the Blue Devils spring football game at Wallace Wade Stadium on Saturday. Fully recovered from the separated shoulder he suffered last September, Connette ran 30 yards for a touchdown and fired a touchdown pass to earn offensive player of the game honors. “Just so much production from him,” Duke coach David Cutcliffe said. QBs take center stage at Duke spring game
“We’ve got players that can make plays on both sides of the ball,” coach David Cutcliffe said. “That’s the key, and we want to grow that number.” Sirk, a freshman, threw scoring passes of 15 yards to Nick Hill and 28 yards to Brandon Watkins for the White. Hill also caught a 4-yard touchdown pass from Sean Schroeder. Three quarterbacks, Renfree, Anthony Boone and Brandon Connette, played with the Blue offense.
