Bulls fall 10-2 but inch closer to playoffs

FORT MILL, S.C. — Dan Johnson’s fourth inning home run was one of few bright spots for the Bulls on Wednesday, as Durham fell 10-2 at Charlotte. Johnson walked twice, doubled, homered and scored both runs for the Bulls (78-59). His 11th homer to center off Deunte Heath (4-7) was the only earned run allowed in 5.2 innings bythe righty, who won his second straight start against the Bulls. The Knights (67-72) got all the offense they would need in a five-run first against Andy Sonnanstine (3-6). Durham, which had committed no more than one error in any of the previous 20 games, committed miscues against the first two hitters. Sonnanstine then allowed hits to four of the next five batters, leading to the five runs. Sonnanstine was knocked out after three innings, allowing seven runs. Brian Baker, just activated

Big, Bad John Drew is key to NCCU ‘D’ in opener at Rutgers tonight

DURHAM — One of the x-factors in tonight’s matchup between N. C. Central and Rutgers (7:34 p.m., ESPN3.com) will be the ability of NCCU nose guard John Drew to command double-team coverage, NCCU head football coach Henry Frazier III said. NCCU’s offense is solid enough for Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano to have pointed out the Scarlet Knights’ inexperienced defense really will have something to deal with when the experienced Eagles have the ball. Come game time, the Eagles will have four senior offensive linemen likely protecting a fifth-year senior quarterback — Frazier hasn’t named a starting signal caller — who’ll throw to some talented junior receivers. “Those guys are battle-tested,” Frazier said. But NCCU’s defense could be the thing —- positively or negatively — for the Eagles, Frazier suggested. In practice, eight or more Eagles defenders have been swarming

Coach K thinks the world of Blue Devil point guard Seth Curry

Published on August 31, 2011 by in Duke

DURHAM — Duke traveled the world in August and coach Mike Krzyzewski returned thinking the world of Seth Curry. The Blue Devils lost their top two guards from last year’s team as ACC player of the year Nolan Smith and freshman point guard Kyrie Irving became NBA first-round draft picks. A 13-day trip to China and Dubai, where Duke played and won four exhibition games, convinced Krzyzewski that Curry, a junior, can help fill the void. “Seth’s good,” Krzyzewski said Wednesday while meeting with reporters at Cameron Indoor Stadium. “He’s just really good. I think he’ll be one of the better point guards in the country, especially if he learns to be a leader and not just a scorer. I think he can do that.” Curry averaged 13.5 points per game during the four games, three in China against a

‘Either/or’ backs Scott, Thompson to fuel Duke ground resurgence?

Published on August 31, 2011 by in Duke

DURHAM – The effort was mighty but the progress incremental for Duke’s rushing offense last season. After finishing last in the nation by averaging 67 yards a game in 2009, the Blue Devils increased that mark to 110 in 2010. The total moved them up 16 places, to 104th, in the NCAA rankings but left Duke dead last in the ACC. Beginning with Saturday’s season-opener with Richmond, Duke aims for much higher numbers this season. “We have to believe in ourselves to get things done,” Duke sophomore running back Juwan Thompson said. “We have the ability to do it at the end of the day. The passing game will open it up for our running game. We just keep increasing the yardage every year.” Duke’s passing game, led by redshirt junior Sean Renfree (3,131 passing yards last season), ranks among
