Miki Ando of Japan wins women's figure skating world championship

MOSCOW — Miki Ando of Japan won the world figure skating championships after overcoming Olympic gold medalist Kim Yu-na in a duel of exceptional elegance on Saturday. The victory by the Japanese skater, who also won at the 2007 worlds, was fitting in a competition that was originally scheduled in her homeland before it was hit by an earthquake and tsunami in March. “I was skating for Japan and I never cared about the result. I’m really happy to have a gold medal,” Ando said. “I worked hard and I’ve become a little bit of a stronger skater than a year ago.” In ice dance, Americans Meryl Davis and Charlie White won the first world gold for their country in the discipline, outpointing 2010 champions Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir of Canada. Auburn among schools reaching out to help storm-ravaged Alabama

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Though they are huge rivals on the field, Auburn University is among the colleges reaching out to help devastated Tuscaloosa, home to the University of Alabama. U of A student government chief of staff Nicole Bohannon says six schools have reached out to volunteer as of Saturday. They are: Auburn, Louisiana State, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Penn State and South Carolina. Bohannon says the groups are mostly collecting supplies on their home campuses and arranging to ship or deliver them to Tuscaloosa. Auburn has also organized a fund drive. Baltimore Ravens' Rays Lewis helps 10-year-old La'Shaun Armstrong after mother's suicide

NEW YORK — NFL linebacker Ray Lewis is helping a 10-year-old New York boy whose mother drowned herself and three children by driving a van into the Hudson River. The surviving child, La’Shaun Armstrong, was to attend a Manhattan fundraiser of the United Athletes Foundation on Saturday night. Some of the proceeds will go to him, including scholarship money. Lewis The Baltimore Ravens star says he reached out to the child as soon as he heard about the April 12 tragedy. The boy escaped through a van window after the car plunged into the water in Newburgh, N.Y., and was rescued by a passing driver. San Francisco Giants' Pablo Sandoval (broken wrist) out 4-6 weeks

WASHINGTON — San Francisco Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval has a broken bone in his right wrist and is expected to miss four to six weeks. Giants head athletic trainer Dave Groeschner says an MRI exam Saturday morning revealed the broken hamate bone. Sandoval probably will have surgery Tuesday. Groeschner says Sandoval was in pain while batting during the World Series champions’ 3-0 loss at the Washington Nationals on Friday night and had an X-ray. Sandoval is hitting .313 with five homers and 14 RBIs this season. Manager Bruce Bochy calls Sandoval’s injury “a tough blow for us.” Bochy says the Giants will call up third baseman Ryan Rohlinger from Triple-A Fresno. George Mason Patriots tab former Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets coach Paul Hewitt to replace Jim Larranaga

FAIRFAX, Va. — Paul Hewitt is the new men’s basketball coach at George Mason. The former Georgia Tech coach was hired Saturday to replace Jim Larranaga, who left this month for the University of Miami. Hewitt was fired by the Yellow Jackets last month. He went 190-162 in 11 years at the school and was just 72-104 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Hewitt coached Georgia Tech to the 2004 national title game, losing 82-73 to Connecticut in San Antonio. [+] Enlarge Hewitt is receiving a $7.2 million buyout over five years from Georgia Tech, making him more affordable for a school such as George Mason of the Colonial Athletic Association.
