The Blue Devils (30-4), last year’s NCAA champions, are the No. 1 seed in the West Regional but will begin play far closer to home. Duke plays Hampton (23-8) on Friday 30 minutes after the conclusion of the 12:40 p.m. Michigan-Tennessee game at Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte, the NCAA announced on Sunday. “We’re honored to be a No. 1seed,” Duke senior Nolan Smith said. “We worked hard all season long and we finished strong. We are excited with our seeding.” Prior to the bracket being announced, Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski felt his team had accomplished enough to be a No. 1 seed. “We’re 30-4 and won the ACC,” Krzyzewski said.

Texas teen basketball player Robert Garza dies during tourney
McALLEN, Texas — A South Texas high school basketball player died after collapsing during a timeout at a tournament in Austin, coaches said. Roma High School junior Robert Garza, 16, was playing in the AAU tournament on Saturday with the Hoopsters, a South Texas club team, when he collapsed without any warning. “It’s unexplainable. He got a glass of water. He ‘high-fived’ Pablo Adame [a Hoopster teammate] and then it just happened. He collapsed,” Hoopster coach Arnold Martinez told The Monitor of McAllen. The cause of death was not yet known, Martinez said. “During pregame warm-ups, he was dunking the ball and laughing with his teammates. Everything looked good,” he told the newspaper. Duke freshman Kyrie Irving, out since December with a toe injury, said Sunday that there is a chance he will return to play sometime in the tournament. “There’s a possibility of it happening,” Irving said after Duke’s 75-58 win over North Carolina in the ACC Tournament championship game at the Greensboro Coliseum. “I’m not sure.
